While driving into downtown Laguna Beach, I saw 5-7 lights in a rough line moving quickly from the ocean to land. They then stopped abruptly, hovered for maybe 15-30 seconds and appeared to disappear into the marine layer.
I was driving into downtown Laguna Beach tonight on CA route 133 (Laguna Canyone Road), going roughly in a westerly-southwesterly direction. When I was approximately in the vicinity of the Sawdust Festival, I saw about a half dozen fairly bright white/yellowish lights moving from the ocean to the land in the general proximity of downtown. They appeared to be moving rapidly and maintained a rough, but not very straight line. They appeared to stop roughly over the downtown area. I turned left on Forest Ave. and began looking for a spot to stop so I could get a better look at this phenomenon. It was a bit tricky trying to observe the lights while trying not to get into an accident.
The first spot I could find to pull over was on Third Street just before Park Avenue. By that time, however, only two or three of the lights were visible and those appeared to be ascending vertically into the marine layer and faded away within 10 seconds. I did not hear any sound accompanying these lights but I was in my car with the windows rolled up and radio on until I stopped. I then drove home, which took maybe another minute. I looked at my watch at about this time and it said 9:12.
One other note: I am virtually certain a number of other people saw these same lights. I believe I observed at least several people in other cars and on sidewalks looking at the objects.
I am guessing these lights might have been composed of a string of lights of some sort tied to helium baloons, or perhaps military helicopters, or even extraterestial although I’m fully aware most unusual lights can be explained.
