Saw & filmed the same object as reported 10/16 in KY & 10/17 in VA
The object that I observed exactly matches those reported on Oct. 16 in Virgie, Kentucky and on Oct. 17 in Cross Junction, VA.
Contrary to the Virgie observer’s 150x telescope, which produced great close ups, my 11″ SCT had a wider angle 40mm eyepiece that yielded 70x. Nevertheless, we both saw the same object as confirmed by our respective videos.
Despite the observers’ reports that the object seemed at times to be stationary, a plot of their locations and date-time data shows that the object’s ground speed was 11 mph, and was steadily northeast bound.
Significantly, still clips from my videos disclose a small, white object nearby the major object, suggesting that the major object might have been suspended by a balloon.
As to the reports of the object’s luminosity, when I first viewed it, it was too bright o look at. It grew dimmer in time and then seemed to maintain a steady brightness.
My opinion: I believe the object was constructed using lightweight aluminum for its primary structure and an outer layer of Mylar, which, to quote an article from Wikipedia, “is a polyester film made from stretched polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and is used for its high tensile strength, chemical and dimensional stability, transparency, reflectivity, gas and aroma barrier properties, and electrical insulation….and reflects up to 99% of light.”
Conclusion: The slow ground-speed,the oscillations, and the steady northeast track all lead me to believe that the object was large, constructed using lightweight material and covered with an outer skin of Mylar; was suspended by a small, but sturdy, balloon(s), and was drifting along with the prevailing northeast weather patterns.
